New Thermal Energy Centre: Jülich Increases Energy Efficiency

Jülich, 22 January 2019 – Climate change poses immense long-term challenges for our society. One of the central issues is achieving a massive reduction of CO2 emissions within Germany and across Europe. To support the Federal Government’s national climate protection goals, Forschungszentrum Jülich is now taking a major step towards becoming an energy-efficient campus by building a thermal energy centre which will in future provide the entire heat supply on campus as well as a large share of the power and cold water supply. Forschungszentrum Jülich is investing a total of around € 26.75 million. On Tuesday, Thomas Rachel (Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research and member of the German Bundestag) from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) together with Jülich’s Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors Karsten Beneke laid the symbolic foundation stone for the large-scale infrastructural project.
