Transferable skills courses

Forschungszentrum Jülich offers training and support to all doctoral researchers, providing them with the opportunity to conduct independent research and work alongside scientists and specialists. In addition to practical experience and guidance, Jülich offers professional, interdisciplinary expertise, which helps doctoral researchers to gain independent, social competencies that are of crucial importance within the scientific environment. These essential cross-sectoral skills can be applied to future challenges and help to prepare for future positions in science, business, and research management.

As of 1 January 2019, all new doctoral researchers must take the basic transferable skills courses. The courses are structured on a modular basis: some courses are mandatory while others can be chosen after consultation with the day-to-day supervisor. Doctoral researchers spend a total of up to 11 days attending such courses during a three-year doctoral project. A number of the courses are mandatory at the beginning of the doctoral project, while others are recommended for more advanced young researchers.

General information on the courses:

  • The courses are held entirely in English.
  • After completing the transferable skills courses, doctoral researchers receive a certificate.
  • The costs of the courses are borne centrally by Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The basic transferable skills courses are based on a mandatory platform, in which an additional course Just Landed is obligatory for doctoral researchers from abroad. The mandatory modules should ideally be completed at an early stage of the doctorate.

Transferable skills courses

Alongside the mandatory courses, additional modules are available that are recommended for researchers in the second or third years of their doctoral projects. Doctoral researchers are free to choose two additional modules with a total duration of up to four days.

Mandatory courses

The mandatory courses consists of four seminars: good scientific practice, scientific writing, scientific presentation and doing science. Here you can find more information.

Information about the courses of transferable skills recommended in the 2nd and 3rd year will follow soon.
