World’s Most Powerful Laboratory Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering Facility Operational

Jülich, 19 November 2013 – X-ray diffraction sheds light on the structure of crystals, nanolayers, and molecules. Using this method, scientists were able to decipher the structure of DNA, for instance. An instrument for this purpose, known as GALAXI, was officially put into operation at Forschungszentrum Jülich today. Parts of the apparatus had been in operation at the DORIS III storage ring in Hamburg for decades before being brought to Forschungszentrum Jülich, where they were adapted to build the most powerful small-angle X-ray scattering facility in the world. Jülich researchers will use the facility to investigate, for example, effects in new materials for data storage. It will also be made available to external researchers.
