The laboratory of Christoph Fahlke in the Institute of Complex Systems - Cellular Biophysics is looking for a PhD student with a thesis project about mechanisms that regulate acidification of synaptic vesicles. We are an interdisciplinary group focusing on the molecular and cellular function of membrane transport proteins (PNAS (2013) 110, 12486-12491, Cell (2015) 160, 542-553, Glia (2017) 65, 388-400, Nat Commun (2017) 8, 2279, EMBO J (2019) e101468) and on their dysfunction in genetic and acquired human diseases (Am J Hum Genet (2009) 85, 273-280; Brain (2012) 135, 3416-3425, Sci Rep (2017) 7, 13913, Nat Genet (2018), 50, 349-354).

PhD Position - Acidification of synaptic vesicles

Your Job:

Synaptic vesicles harness pH gradients to accumulate neurotransmitters, and synaptic vesicle acidification is thus key to proper synaptic function. The PhD project focuses on the mechanisms underlying acidification of synaptic vesicles, with special focus on CLC-type chloride/proton exchangers. Available methods range from molecular biology, patch clamp electrophysiology, neuronal cell culture, optogenetics to fluorescence spectroscopy.

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in the field of Biology/Physics/Chemistry or related
  • High motivation and interest and/or experience in biophysics and biochemistry
  • Social competence and good communication skills for collaborative work in and with interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to communicate in English
