Two awards for IEK-14 dissertations in the field of power-to-fuel

The journal articles from IEK-14 on the topic of power-to-fuel are very well received in the scientific community. The quality of the scientific work in this area was confirmed by two awards for former IEK-14 doctoral researchers and their dissertations.

Dr. Lea Eggemann received the UMSICHT Science Award 2022 for her dissertation "An environmental and economic assessment of a novel power-to-fuel system for biogas plants". Already at the beginning of 2021, Dr. Steffen Schemme was awarded the Energy Research Prize 2020 for his dissertation "Techno-economic assessment of processes for the production of fuels from H2 and CO2" as part of the Energy Research Offensive “Energieforschungsoffensive.NRW”.

The UMSICHT Science Award honors people who promote the so important dialog between science and society with their work. Dr. Eggemann received the prize in the science category for her work on sustainable methanol production on manure-based biogas plants at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The topic of the dissertation was developed together with Dr. Eggemann's former doctoral supervisor Dr. Peter Burauel who, in addition to heading the Future Campus at Forschungszentrum Jülich, taught at the University of Bonn and who unfortunately passed away in May 2020. The work found an important anchorage through the support of the IEK-3 of Prof. Detlef Stolten. The dissertation was reviewed by Prof. Thomas Heckelei, also teaching at the University of Bonn, and Prof. Ralf Peters from IEK-14.

The Energy Research Prize honors outstanding final theses by young scientists at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Bachelor's, Master's and Dissertation categories. Dr. Schemme received the prize in the dissertation category, with the jury stating: "The central scientific contribution of the work is the techno-economic comparison of hydrogen-based production processes for different fuels, which has not previously existed in this depth in the specialist literature". The dissertation was reviewed by Prof. Detlef Stolten from RWTH Aachen University and IEK-3 and by Prof. Manfred Wirsum also from RWTH Aachen University, and supervised by Prof. Ralf Peters from IEK-14.
