Innovative Method Improves Diagnostics for Brain Metastases

Jülich/Aachen, 30 August 2012 – Malignant tumours such as lung or breast carcinoma often cause brain metastases, which are usually treated with radiotherapy. Using the FET-PET method for diagnostics, scientists from JARA-BRAIN – a joint initiative of RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich – and the Department of Neurology at University Hospital Cologne are now able to ascertain after radiotherapy whether the treatment has been successful or if any new brain metastases have formed in the meantime. Obtaining this valuable information does not require an operation or tissue sampling.
