Physics of Nanoscale Systems (ER-C-1) / Microstructure Research (PGI-5)

Development of new procedures for understanding material properties on the atomic level with a special focus on ultrahigh resolution electron microscopy techniques. In the near future, the life sciences will be added as the first new field of application. Furthermore, we enable researchers from science and industry to use our instruments and methods, supported by our experts, and aim to establish a national user facility for the scientific community.

The first spherical-aberration(Cs) corrected TEM was co-developed and operated at the ER-C. Today this technique defines state-of-the-art electron microscopy and has been commercialized in more than 1000 instruments worldwide.

ER-C’s Electron Microscope Receives Unique Upgrades

Forschungszentrum Jülich operates some of the most powerful electron microscopes in Europe at the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C), in part together with RWTH Aachen University. The instruments not only make it possible to study the structure and composition of materials with sub-Ångstrom spatial resolution, but also to determine their local functional properties. Such capabilities are essential for the development of innovative new materials, such as those needed for information and energy technology.

PICO 2021

The Sixth Conference on Frontiers of Aberration Corrected Electron Microscopy is scheduled to take place in spring 2021. Due to ongoing restrictions in connection with the Corona Pandemic, the format might be changed to an online conference. The conference will again address recent advances in methods and applications for the study of solids in condensed matter research and the life sciences by the application of advanced electron microscopy techniques.
