Electronic Properties

At the PGI "Electronic Properties" Institute, we explore the interrelations between electronic structure and physical properties such as magnetism and magnetic phenomena by applying, for example, synchrotron radiation techniques. Systems of interest range from thin film systems, quantum wires and dots to molecules. Keywords here are nanosciences, spintronics, quantum computing, and giant magnetoresistance.

Original, Innovative, and Internationally Recognized

This year, Prof. Astrid Lambrecht, Chair of the Board of Directors, was able to award Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Excellence Prize to three outstanding young researchers. Dr. Iulia Cojocariu, Dr. Alexander van Meegen, and Dr. Moritz L. Weber accepted the award, which is endowed with € 5,000 each, on Saturday, 12 August 2023, during this year’s JuDocs Ceremony. “This year’s Jülich Excellence Prize honours the achievements of Dr. Iulia Cojocariu, Dr. Alexander van Meegen, and Dr. Moritz L. Weber – three young scientists in the fields of materials and energy research as well as neuroscience. Their theses impressed the jury with their originality, innovative approach, and international recognition in the scientific community,” explained Prof. Astrid Lambrecht.

Quantum metrology is one of the pillars of quantum technologies. It shows how one can use quantum effects, such as entanglement and squeezing, to increase the precision of the measurements one can do. It also establishes the ultimate bounds, on precision that any measurement can achieve, e.g. through the Heisenberg uncertainty relations and the quantum speed limits.
